Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why choose an in-office tooth whitening versus an at-home treatment?

A professional tooth whitening is a cosmetic procedure using a medical-strength bleaching agent that removes surface stains on the teeth.

The strength of the bleaching agent in Dr. Andy's office allows you to achieve a whiter smile because it's more potent than store-bought products. Additionally, Dr. Andy provides you with a take-home whitening pen to continuously improve your results or preserve the current level of whitening.

Generally, the effects of a professional whitening last up to three years, however, the duration depends on your habits after the whitening. For instance, if you smoke, drink wine or coffee, or partake in any other activities that stain your teeth, your results won't last as long. It’s important to take care of your teeth to ensure lasting results.

Can anybody get a professional teeth whitening?

A professional whitening treatment isn't for people who have periodontal disease because the process can irritate the gums.

Additionally, if you have caps, bonding, tooth-colored fillings, or crowns on your front teeth, you may want to avoid whitening because the materials won't respond to the bleach.

What does a professional teeth whitening entail?

Dr. Andy cleans your teeth thoroughly before applying a protective gel to your gums. Using a tray customized to your mouth, he applies the whitening agent.

The whitening agent consists of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide and is given at a safe, yet highly effective concentration. You'll notice minimal discomfort or sensitivity from the treatment.

Usually, Dr. Andy then shines a special light on your teeth after he removes the tray to enhance the results.

Typically, the treatment takes about 20 minutes. Your initial procedure might take a bit longer because Dr. Andy has to examine your teeth and gums to ensure it's safe for you. You can expect to see results of the whitening within days, but it could take up to two weeks to see the full results.

How many treatments are necessary?

Although you see results the first time you have the treatment, you typically need two to three appointments to see the full results.
